A Hole In My Pride 2023

This piece is representative of my strong sense of pride and how the hatred, rhetoric, and attacks on the LGBTQ+ community have created a hole in that pride. The canvas is where this piece began, it is bright and whimsical with the colors of the gay and trans pride flags. I then cut a hole in that canvas as the emergence of hatred directed at LGBTQ+ people in Florida has really impacted me personally. Having worked for a queer youth organization I served on the front lines conducting outreach and interacting with community members. Most of these interactions were positive, but every so often someone would come along and ask me to “stop recruiting/grooming children” and/or call me a “pedophile/predator.” The more often this happened the bigger that hole became. Seeing over 400 anti-LGBTQ+ bills presented in 34 states demonstrates this is not just a local problem but a national one, which again widened that hole in my pride. The white boxes covered in blood represent harmful legislation; the numbers on them are specific bills that have been presented and will likely pass into law. The black paper creeping from the inside out represents the hate and toxicity that is spreading and is now infiltrating my exterior expression and has parts of me wanting to be a little quieter when all I want to do is scream and fight. The authentic printed logos and sayings are things that haunt negative thoughts/feelings, I refused to put the time into hand making those items. The LGBTQ+ flags and protest signs are representative of how I feel about the things that are happening and the causes I am willing to stand and fight for; reproductive rights, gun regulations, African American History, DEI, LGBTQ+ rights, healthcare, mental health resources, the list could go on.

Resilience 2023

As marginalized communities face attacks across the country this piece speaks to the emergence of resilience in individuals who are standing up and fighting back. The fists are a range of skin tones to represent the recent escalation of racism; as well as the intersectionality of BIPOC LGBTQ+ individuals, who face more adversity and travel a more challenging path than someone who is white and LGBTQ+. The brick wall speaks to the systemic issues that are engrained in our country, and how rights that have been fought for and earned already are being under siege. There are a few bricks emerging from the wall which represent the changes marginalized communities make as they strive toward equality. However, bricks continue to be added to the wall representing additional challenges those communities are facing. There are two sets of ‘progress pride dripz’ along the top. The first layer was covered in a pearl to represent how society has and continues to try to erase marginalized communities, but we have turned that ‘erasure’ into pearl with a classic shimmer despite the pain. Over that is a fresh set of ‘progress pride dripz’ representing the resilience of the BIPOC & LGBTQ+ communities. No matter how hard some people may try they will not be erased and will continue to fight back for equality. This piece was featured at ArtOut 2023 and displayed at the Gulfport library for pride month.
American Freedom?2023

The emergence of our rights being taken away inspired this piece. The rainbow flag is the base of this piece, but it is upside down as the LGBTQ+ community is under attack across the country. A range of skin tones as well as trans colors are smeared across different areas representing those individuals all over the map and speaks to the intersectionality of BIPOC/LGBTQ+ folks. The darkness in the lower left corner represents hate and violence. Such as women’s rights, guns, healthcare, hate, etc. are only visible if you look at a certain angle; but some of these things only if you look at a certain angle. The silver drip represents bullet holes that our government seemingly just covers in glitter to ignore the real problems our society is facing. The white in the top left corner represents hope, and all the thing’s marginalized communities are looking for such as acceptance, kindness, and freedom. Some of these words can also only be seen at a certain angles and you cannot see all the words at the same time, it depends on your perception, the lighting, and perspective. The words matching the rainbow are representative of the meaning of the color in the pride flag. The words in rainbow not matching represent my hopes for society. The USA drips are dirty as my faith in our country is wavering. The drips not smudged are representative of people of color, trans folks, LGB folks, and Americans as well as the sadness people are experiencing in these identities. This piece was featured at the ArtOut 2023 Gallery at the Gulfport Library. (Available FOR SALE)
Powerful Survival 2023
SOLD

‘Powerful Survival’ features intergenerational quotes from queer icons that make me feel empowered during a time of attacks on the LGBTQ+ community. Audrey Lorde is featured in two quotes including “We are powerful because we have survived.” As a queer woman of color Lorde’s experience with intersectionality is an especially prevalent problem as queer people of color continue to suffer more adversity than their white queer siblings. The pearlized base represents the inner sparkle we are trying to find within ourselves. The splatter represents the chaos we are presently living in. The drips represent both the pride and sadness of the queer and trans communities. ‘Powerful Survival’ represents the pride, strength, and resilience the LGBTQ+ community has faced and the power I feel, knowing we continue to make progress and become more visible to the world around us. This was displayed at Art with Pride 2023 in Sarasota. This piece now lives at The Fabulous Arts Foundation (FabAF) Center in Sarasota
QUEERniverse 2023

‘QUEERniverse’ features different color combinations in the hearts that represent some of the different identities in the LGBTQ+ community (pansexual, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, gay, asexual, genderqueer). There are also two hearts to speak to the people of color within the LGBTQ+ and the intersectionality those individuals experience. The hearts attached to wire coming out of the painting give a 3D effect as well as being something that can be changed and/or moved about the ‘QUEERniverse.’ The raised black sparkled stars, glitter stars, and gold twinkles represent the ability of LGBTQ+ folks to add some sparkle and pizazz to anything. The ‘QUEERniverse’ is continuing to expand creating a more inclusive and affirming space for all LGBTQ+ people together. This speaks specifically to having faith that things will get better and to the unity of our community.
Finding Authenticity 2023

I feel society puts us in boxes when it’s not that simple. Here is a look inside of the box that defines me. The black represents the darkness, depression, and anxiety I have struggled with my whole life. Color was always an important part of my chaotic childhood. As I continue to process my past trauma, things become more vibrant and defined. Circle gems appear where there is a full rainbow intersection to represent some of my prouder moments. The oval gems represent my coming out as a lesbian and non-binary. The silver speaks to light shining through the darkness. The glitter represents my pride and childlike spirit sticking with me during my search for authenticity. The two triangles blended together represent my queer and nonbinary identities uniting, as I continue to explore what authenticity looks like for me.
